Bisexuals – Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!

The problem with the lack of bisexual visibility is we did not have any role models when growing up. No wonder people don’t believe bisexuality is a thing , way too many people don’t think they know any bisexuals. This is one of the reasons why in addition to being out I present lectures to groups and college students about bisexuality and non binary gender identity, I want the next generation to have the opportunity to hear first hand from a bisexual and bigender person who has a positive attitude about how fabulous our lives and relationships can be. Instead of “woe is me” I want a society to say “How cool is that! ” and that is exactly the response I am getting. If society learns that being bisexual is a good thing, then instead of people being ashamed of their bisexuality they will embrace and celebrate who they are and we need a lot more of that.

The lucky ones in the next generation are growing up knowing they have choices, knowing that there are pathways to live their life exactly as the person they were born as. This is why I am out and visible , not to put my private sexaulity in peoples face but instead to simply say we are here and we are normal every day people with a rightful place in society. I say this because we need a few million more people willing to be the everyday out bisexual to really build acceptance. I believe it is more difficult to gain acceptance from people who don’t think they know any bisexuals, and research validates this belief, but when we become just one of several bisexuals our friends and family know then the discussion becomes a lot easier and acceptance follows.

I understand being out is a very personal decision and not everyone has the circumstances where they can out but those who can be out can make a huge difference in the future of bisexuals and their relationships. So as we move from Celebrate Bisexuality Day and Bi Visibility Week and head to Octobers National Coming Out Day it is my hope that we can help our friends and family get to know more bisexuals, we really do make great dads, sons, moms and daughters, cousins , friends, teachers, plumbers even in some cases Governors.
